beasts in binary city

Dave Mantel It starts in a familiar sounding vein if you're familiar with any of Alex's other recent work, but slowly over the course of the album evolves in to a fuzzy, crushed, electronic vibe that reminds me a lot of Disasterpeace and other synth based artists. I think it is so wonderful! Sometimes chill, sometimes in your face bombastic and shreddy, you should absolutely check it out. Favorite track: human skull packed with explosives.

about

this album is about feeling like a mess in a world that seems to expect a certain order---about wildness struggling to thrive within a restricted, domesticated life.

recorded in an apartment in a Midwestern city, during a conflicted summer, 2017. edited and mixed that fall, at Sweet Pea Farm, Mount Desert Island, Maine.

each song started from a recording of a fully improvised electric guitar + looper session. the guitar recordings were edited to be more concise (though not overly so). then I'd listen along to the guitar track and record an electronic drums improvisation (performed via midi controller) to go with it. over the course of a couple months I'd listen back to the recordings-in-progress and tweak this, and edit that, continually tightening up the loose structures and erratic rhythms... but trying all the same to embrace the natural, momentary flow of thought/consciousness that each composition was guided by as it was performed. the result is something both spontaneous, and carefully assembled, a narrative soundtrack to the inner crises I experienced while living in the city.
